However if you live in a home that was built prior to 1970 . The likelihood of you having a bathroom with no exhaust fan is pretty high . So what do you do ? In homes like this the average construction type Is usually plaster or lath and plaster. this can propose quite an obstacle when wanting to install a bathroom exhaust fan system. Most times when you’re installing a bathroom exhaust and it ends up on the second floor . That’s because there’s more houses with the blueprints calling for the majority of the bedrooms to be on the second floor . So when installing a bathroom ceiling exhaust fan in a secondd floor ceiling , you do have a few things going for you . The attic area above the secondd-floor bedrooms and bathrooms will be vital in allowing and for the venting or duct work to be installed for your new bathroom fan . Most people would ask the question do I need to have special wiring added to power the bathroom exhaust fan? The answer is yes .if you are installing a small bathroom exhaust fan is perfectly acceptable to run it to an existing switch in the bathroom to provide power for the bathroom exhaust fan. However in older homes such as the type that need this kind of Installation , the wiring is often not adequate to supply a new modern day bathroom exhaust fan. Modern-day bathroom exhaust fans are in need of a ground wire to properly and adequately ground the metal casing of the bathroom exhaust fan so that It does not propose electrical shock hazard. This ground wire is absent from many homes that were built prior to 1970 as the national electrical code at that time allowed for what houses to be wired with no Main ground wire installed at each individual device. if you’re having a bathroom exhaust fan installed into a home prior to 1970 construction . This would make it illegal to install bath fan off the existing circuitry . ~way to properly installed a new switch leg and the new bathroom exhaust fan in this situation would be to run a new home run circuit wire from the Main electrical panel or lighting sub panel in the home  . This would allow the bathroom fan installation to be installed exclusively with copper wiring . With the new copper wiring installed to a new switch box location that is independent of existing aluminum wiring . The bathrooms fan installation could be completed and the end result would be a copper circuit that is completely isolated from the existing aluminum circuitry and allows for the safe and legal function of the new bathroom fan installation. some bathroom fans are exceedingly large in their power capacity and their amperage draw. in this case the above mentioned circuit would be necessary as well . Other examples of outdated wiring that is not acceptable to feed new devices are the following . Most wires that are insulated with the cloth type wiring insulation would be considered unacceptable as most of them contain a smaller or diminished ground wire and or copper where the wiring inside is not 100% electrolytic copper . 

the next step in the bathroom fan installation is of course the docking . any bathroom fan installation will require a duck to be installed . As the whole intention of the bathroom exhaust fan is to get that warm moist ear from the bathroom area out of your house where it will not cause damaging mold mildew and fungus . many people feel it  is necessary to cut a hole in the roof in order to allow this warm steam to escape from the home . However in many cases if there is a key existing cable and vent then the small plastic flange that is included in most exhaust fan  ducting kits is suitable .
