    GFI

    GFI Outlets .

Okay what is the GFI outlet anyway? A GFI outlet is an outlet the senses electrical current leaving the device and measures that against the electrical current coming back to the device. A  GFI or ground fault circuit interrupter type devices can be installed in a regular outlet boxes or as a circuit breaker in the electrical panel. As electrical current leaves the ground fault circuit interrupter device or GFI it travels towards the source device that is utilizing the electrical current. Prior to the invention of the GFI this electrical current would leave the electrical device outlets and find whatever source it could to get back into the ground and travel back to the source that it originated from. After the advent of the GFI outlets, this electrical current that was finding its way into the ground through people or other means was greatly hampered. The GFI device by measuring the current that Is leaving the outlet and gauging It against the current that is returning to the outlets, in essence can tell whether or not the electricity that is leaving the electrical device is returning. If the electricity Is leaving the device and finding another way into the ground besides the return path provided by the GFI receptacle in itself. Then the circuitry Inside the GFI receptacle understands that there is a disparity between the voltage that is leaving and the amount of voltage that is returning. At this point in the matter of a millisecond the GF I opens the circuit and disconnects the power. Many people wonder why many of their devices such outlets or lights shut off and there seems to be no circuit breaker that is in the off position.. This usually happens because the outlets or the lighting is connected to a GF I type outlet. Good examples of devices and or outlets that are connected to GF I type outlets are the  following , bathroom fans especially bathroom fans that are located above bathtubs. Kitchen countertop receptacles ,  all kitchen countertop receptacles are now required to be GFI protected. as well as garage outlets are required to be GFI protected. Now just because these devices and locations are required to be GFI protected that does not mean that you will find necessarily a GF I type outlet in this location. GFI outlets are designed so that they may protect themselves as well as other items that are downstream of the device on the same electrical circuit. This is very cost effective for the homeowner and for the electrician’s installing the original GFI circuitry in the home. However for the homeowner this can tend to be extremely confusing.. When outlets or devices and receptacles and lighting fixtures are all off and no one seems to know why or where to begin to look. Many times it may be as simple as locating the ground fault circuit interrupter or GFI device and pushing the reset button. However many times these devices are damaged by voltage surges from the utility company power lines. Also these GFI devices are easily damaged when lightning or lightning strikes hit near your home or are directed to your home and your home is not properly protected with a whole house surge protection device. The reason why outlets are used in some cases and breakers are used in other locations to provide the GFI protection in the home is simple The cost associated with installing all GFI breakers and the lack of space in many of the electrical panels provided on new home construction causes significant deterrence to adding all GFI breakers in a home and thus giving the homeowner an easy task when the GFI device trips. The GFI type outlets that can protect more devices and lighting downstream are much more affordable than the breakers that are designed to go inside of a standard panel. That’s why  we will continually , for a great deal of  time , have this difficult problem of locating the GFI device and replacing or resetting it .I hope this sheds some light on the problem and we are here to serve you and take care of all the electrical needs when they arise thank you !
